LEDs can be dimmed in two ways: analog and pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming. PWM dimming has a frequency and a duty cycle. PWM dimming works by turning the LED on and off at a very high speed. The frequency determines the number of pulses per second of the LED, and the duty cycle determines the duration of the pulses. For the frequency happens so fast, human beings perceive a lower brightness from the LED.

Signals from PWM can only be turned on or off at any given time. This means that the led either receives all the voltage or does not receive power at all.
