Whether a power supply is magnetic or electronic depends on the internal ballast. The ballast is to mainly help regulate the flow of current.
By volume, the electronic driver is about 60% the size of the magnetic power supply. By weight, it’s around 3x lighter. By costs, the electronic power supply is about 9% cheaper than the magnetic one.
Magnetic led drivers are known for longer warranty, and they will usually give signs of looming death before it comes. In case the failure happened outside their warranty, they are often repairable. Electronic power supplies, due to their complexity, it is difficult to diagnosing and repairing them once they’ve failed. That is why the professionals will tend to magnetic one.
Due to the nature of the design, magnetic led transformers will flicker at a rate of about 120 iterations/s. To the human eye, this is nearly invisible. But if you use these lights in the presence of recording equipment which runs at 60 or below, you may see the flickers in the video.
Magnetic led drivers do not generate the RFI disturbances that electronic led drivers are have . This is particularly important to the HAM, CB, SSB.
