Traditional incandescent and fluorescent lamps are power-driven devices that can be used directly with 240V 50Hz AC power. Today, however, these have gradually been replaced by more efficient, longer-life LEDs that typically operate at 12 volt dc led power supply. Therefore, LED lights must have a power source to convert 240 VAC to their desired DC level.

However, a simple AC/DC power supply that simply rectifies and converts the input power to DC power is not sufficient for safe and reliable LED lighting operation.
